We are Steam Crow.
STEAM CROW IS AN ARIZONA BASED STUDIO
We are misfits who design, illustrate, and create astonishingly good monster goods. Established in 2005 by artists Daniel and Dawna Davis, we're dedicated to making amazing and odd goods with our unique old-time cartoon aesthetic.
WE COME FROM BANDS
We were both in bands when we met in the Inland Northwest city of Spokane, Washington. Dawna was the singer in “PlugUgly” a grungy powerhouse trio who made Cheney, Washington, proud. Daniel played bass in the “RV Thieves”, a pop-punk trio who played way too loud and fast.
When we met we quickly discovered that we had more than a love for making music in common; both dug making art and shared the DIY work ethic. After the bands faded we were tired of the smokey bar scene and drummer drama and focused back on making art. We got married (1998), had a kid (the “Goblin Boy” in 2002), and ended up in Arizona (2004.)
The Discovery
We were looking for our next big challenge (after allowing the Goblin Boy to grow a bit larger) and we ended up attending the 2005 San Diego Comic-Con for a much needed vacation. A couple of days into the convention, (hip-deep in the pop-culture, art, and comics) we had a vision to come back next year and show off a book of our own. So, we did.
IT WAS ALL DAWNA'S IDEA
Five months later, after strenuous work writing, illustrating, and formatting, we had our first book in hand, Caught Creatures. In early 2006 we hit the comic convention circuit as "Steam Crow", and we've never looked back. Today, we've published 10 books, designed hundreds of products like buttons, art prints, stickers, glasses, designer toys, serigraphs, and all kinds of cool stuff for our Steam Crow Shop. We've taken the show on the road, and we continued to do tons of events every year. Heck, we even became official an Disney Artist with several licensed pieces in the Disneyland Wonderground Gallery.
Steam Crow is like our very own art band. (But way more successful than any band we were ever in!)
The Monster Rangers
7 years in, we "accidently" discovered the Monster Rangers. Well, not really. We designed the fakelore folklore for the Monster Rangers - a 1903 community of monster-loving folks.
We designed some patches, and some art... and people started JOINING!
But, there wasn't anything TO join. So, we made it. Then people asked about uniforms... and started making them. So, we joined in, and added some structure. Then they wanted to do meetups and campouts, and we said "No! It's not real".
But thing is, it was real. And it changed everything.
We redesigned the booth, started working on things people were asking for (branches, more badges, patches, campouts, bandanas, etc...) and it took on a life of it's own. For 6 years we did campouts all over the West on a Summer Camp Tour... but then we got tired, and passed the local camps on to the local Barrows.
CAMP MONSTRO
The latest wrinkle in our adventure is called "Camp Monstro", and it's our biggest challenge yet. We bought 20 acres of land in the distant SE Arizona near a magical township called "Portal", right behind the Chiricahua National Monument. It's amazing there... beautiful, mountainous, and even a little spooky. (Blackest of nights.)
Our goal: To build a crazy Monster Rangers permanent campground for folks to come visit, collaborate, and commune with nature. We're just getting started, but you can follow along at CampMonstro.com
Our Mission
We create wonder for the weird.
Steam Crow builds stories, art, and experiences for those who see the world a little differently—who find beauty in the odd, friendship in the strange, and endless joy in the making of things.
